There is something so beautiful about photographing a mother and her little one exactly as they are.
No elaborate setup. No perfectly coordinated outfits. Just a sunny afternoon, a garden full of green leaves, and the kind of little moments that you know will become precious memories years from now.
This mother-and-daughter session in Bellingham, Washington was full of that kind of sweetness. We spent time outside surrounded by greenery and warm afternoon light, capturing the connection between them as naturally as possible.

When I photograph families, I don't want every image to feel posed.
Of course, I love a beautiful portrait looking directly at the camera—but some of my favorite photographs happen in between those moments. A little hand reaching for Mom's shoulder. A child leaning into their parent. The way someone smiles when they aren't thinking about being photographed.
Those small interactions tell the story of a family.
For this session, the natural setting gave us so much to work with. The vines, trees, sunlight, and soft greenery created a beautiful Pacific Northwest backdrop for family portraits in Bellingham.
Photographing the Little Years
Toddlers change so quickly.
One day they're small enough to be carried everywhere, and seemingly overnight they're running through the yard, developing their own little personalities and becoming more independent.
That's one of the reasons I love photographing this stage of life. You don't have to make a toddler sit perfectly still or smile on command to create meaningful photographs. Sometimes the most memorable images are the ones that show their personality exactly as it was.
