As a photographer new to Bellingham, I've been exploring the local arts, movement, and wellness communities. One of the most inspiring experiences I've found has been witnessing the contact dance community gathering along the waterfront as the sun sets over Bellingham Bay.
What Is Contact Dance?
Contact dance, often called Contact Improvisation, is a movement practice that explores connection through shared movement, weight, balance, listening, and presence. Developed in the United States in the 1970s, it has grown into a worldwide movement community focused on creativity, awareness, and authentic human connection.
Unlike choreographed partner dancing, contact dance is largely improvised. Participants respond to one another moment by moment, creating a unique dance that cannot be planned ahead of time.
The result is something that often looks like a blend of:
