One of my favorite things about photographing Bellingham, Washington is discovering the people behind the places that make this community feel so alive.
The Bellingham Farmers Market is a perfect example.
Walk through the market on a sunny Saturday and you'll find so much more than fresh produce. There are local flower growers carrying buckets overflowing with color, artists and makers displaying things they've created by hand, small business owners chatting with customers, musicians playing in the middle of the market, and people simply enjoying a morning downtown.
As a Bellingham photographer, these are exactly the kinds of moments I love documenting.
Photographing the People Behind Bellingham's Small Businesses
One of the things that stood out to me while photographing the market was how much personality exists within every booth.
Every display represents someone's idea, craft, business, or passion.
From handmade goods and locally grown flowers to wellness products and carefully designed vendor displays, there are stories everywhere you look.
That's what I love about small business and branding photography. A business isn't just a product sitting on a table. It's the person who created it, the environment where customers discover it, and all of the little details that make someone stop and take a closer look.
Photographing vendors in their natural environment can tell that story in a way that a traditional product photo sometimes can't.
Local Musicians Bring the Market to Life
And then there's the music.
Walking through the market and suddenly hearing someone playing guitar and harmonica is one of those little experiences that gives a place personality.
I loved photographing the musician surrounded by shoppers, tents, vendors, and the movement of the market behind him. Instead of removing all of those distractions, I wanted some of the photographs to actually show them.
They tell you where you are.
They capture a little slice of a Saturday in downtown Bellingham, Washington.
Flowers, Handmade Goods & Little Details
Of course, I couldn't walk past all of those flowers without photographing them.
The colors were incredible.
I also found myself photographing vendor displays, packaging, signs, products, and other small details throughout the market. These photographs may seem simple, but they're incredibly useful for local businesses.
Detail photographs can become website imagery, Instagram content, Google Business Profile photos, blog images, promotional material, and pieces of a larger brand story.
A strong collection of brand photographs doesn't need to be made up entirely of posed portraits. Sometimes the photograph of your products sitting on your market table tells just as much of the story.
Why I Love Photographing Local Bellingham Businesses
Since coming to Bellingham, I've loved getting to know this city through my camera.
Photographing places like the Bellingham Farmers Market gives me the opportunity to meet local makers, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and other creative people who are contributing something of their own to the community.
And that's something I'd love to photograph more of.
If you're a small business owner, maker, artist, wellness professional, restaurant, café, or creative entrepreneur in Bellingham, professional photography doesn't have to mean standing stiffly in front of a blank wall.
Let's photograph what you actually do.
Your workspace. Your products. Your personality. Your customers. Your process. Your storefront. The little details that make your business yours.
Those are often the photographs that make people feel like they already know you before they ever walk through your door.
