There is something special about a summer events in Bellingham, Washington.
There are some events that are difficult to describe until you've experienced them — and Collectivision Festival at Lookout Arts Quarry is one of them.
Hidden among the trees near Bellingham, Washington, Lookout Arts Quarry became a colorful little world of its own: live music, art, costumes, movement, workshops, laughter, community, and some wonderfully unexpected moments.
I had the opportunity to photograph Collectivision, spending the festival documenting everything from energetic performances to the quiet candid moments happening between them.
Photographing Collectivision Near Bellingham, Washington
One of my favorite things about event photography is capturing what an experience actually felt like rather than simply documenting what happened.
Collectivision gave me endless opportunities to do that.
Throughout the festival, people gathered beneath the trees to listen to music, participate in workshops, dance, create art, connect with one another, and simply enjoy being together.
There were elaborate costumes, musicians performing under colorful lights, spontaneous portraits, intimate conversations, playful characters and entire scenes that seemed to appear out of nowhere.
The result was a gallery filled with both big, energetic moments and small human ones.
A Festival in The Forest
The setting made photographing this event especially beautiful.
Lookout Arts Quarry feels completely different from a traditional event venue. Stages and gathering spaces are tucked among towering trees, handmade structures and art installations.
During the day, sunlight filtered through the forest canopy and illuminated the festival grounds. At night, colorful stage lighting transformed those same woods into something almost surreal.
As a photographer, I loved being able to incorporate the environment into the photographs rather than separating the people from it.
Wide photographs helped tell the story of the venue itself, while closer images captured the expressions, relationships and personalities that made the festival feel alive.
The People are the Story:
Some of my favorite photographs from Collectivision weren't necessarily the biggest performances.
They were the in-between moments.
Friends laughing together. Someone turning toward another person with a huge smile. People lounging around the festival grounds. Artists preparing for something creative. Couples sharing a moment. Performers being wonderfully ridiculous in front of my camera.
Those photographs are a huge part of why I love candid event photography.
Years later, an image of a stage can remind you where you were.
But a photograph of the people you experienced it with can remind you how it felt to be there.
Live Music & Performance Photography at Collectivision:
Once the sun went down, photographing Collectivision became an entirely different experience.
The forest was illuminated with vivid pinks, purples and other stage lighting as musicians and performers took over the night.
Photographing live performances requires anticipating moments quickly — expressions change, performers move and lighting can shift dramatically from one second to the next.
I love that challenge.
Rather than trying to make every image perfectly polished and posed, I want performance photographs to retain some of the movement, intensity and personality of the person onstage.
Collectivision certainly wasn't lacking personality.

Events like Collectivision remind me why photography matters so much to me.
A festival may last only a few days, but hundreds of little stories unfold during that time.
My job is to notice them.
I want my photographs to preserve the obvious moments — the performances, artists and activities — while also capturing the pieces people might otherwise forget.
The expression on someone's face.
The way the sunlight looked through the trees.
The ridiculous costume that made everyone laugh.
The group of people sitting together in the afternoon.
The energy surrounding a nighttime performance.
Together, those photographs become more than documentation. They become a visual record of a community gathering in one particular place and time.
