Pacific Northwest Portrait Photography
There is something about the Pacific Northwest that makes intimacy feel a little more natural.
Maybe it's the towering evergreens, the moss-covered trails, the soft mist hanging in the trees, or the way the light filters through the forest. Maybe it's the feeling of being tucked away from the rest of the world, surrounded by nothing but trees, water, and the person you love.
For this intimate couples photography session in Bellingham, Washington, we wanted exactly that.
Something sensual. Something earthy. Something that felt less like a traditional couples photoshoot and more like stepping into a private little world together.
Intimacy in the Bellingham Forest
Just south of Bellingham, the Chuckanut Mountains create one of the most beautiful natural backdrops in Whatcom County. The trails weave through dense forest, moss, ferns, creeks, and towering trees before opening up to views of the Salish Sea, Bellingham Bay, and the surrounding islands.
It's the kind of landscape that doesn't need much direction.
You can walk together.
Hold each other.
Laugh.
Slow down.
Kiss beneath the trees.
Let your hands find each other naturally.
And instead of asking you to "pose," I want you to actually experience each other.
That's what makes an intimate couples session feel different.
Steamy, but still completely you
When I photograph couples, I'm not interested in creating something that feels overly posed or staged.
I'm looking for the tiny moments between the obvious ones — the way one person pulls the other closer, a forehead resting against a shoulder, fingers intertwined, a quiet laugh after a kiss, or the look that happens when you're completely comfortable with someone.
Those moments can be incredibly beautiful.
And sometimes, they're a little steamy, too.
The goal isn't to create something that looks like everyone else's couples photography. It's to create photographs that feel like your relationship — playful, romantic, passionate, adventurous, tender, or all of those things at once.
Why Bellingham is perfect for intimate couples photography
Bellingham gives couples so many different environments within a relatively small area.
You can start in a lush forest and end beside the water. You can wander through the Chuckanut Mountains, explore a quiet trail, or find a secluded stretch of shoreline.
Places like Arroyo Park offer dense woodland and Chuckanut Creek, while Larrabee State Park combines forest and shoreline along Chuckanut Drive.
For something closer to town, Whatcom Falls Park offers forest, creek, waterfalls, and the iconic stone bridge.
And for couples who want that classic deep-green Pacific Northwest feeling, Stimpson Family Nature Reserve is another beautiful wooded setting.
The location becomes part of the story.
A couples session that feels like an escape
I love the idea of couples photography feeling like an experience rather than an appointment.
You don't have to know how to pose.
You don't have to be models.
You don't even have to feel particularly comfortable in front of a camera when we start.
I'll guide you through movement, prompts, and small interactions that give you something natural to do together. Eventually, you'll probably forget the camera is there.
And that's when the magic happens.
The photographs become less about "looking good for the camera" and more about remembering how it felt to be together.
The warmth.
The closeness.
The laughter.
The quiet.
The chemistry.
The feeling of being completely wrapped up in another person while the forest surrounds you.
