There is something powerful about photographing people working together.
In Port Townsend, Washington, I had the opportunity to document a community coming together to plant, garden, build, create, and care for a shared space. Rather than simply photographing the finished result, this session focused on the people and process behind it — the hands in the soil, conversations between neighbors, shared projects, and small moments of connection that happen when people work side by side.
This is the kind of storytelling I love about documentary photography.
Documentary Photography in Port Townsend, WA
Documentary photography is about paying attention to what is already happening.
Instead of creating a highly posed or staged environment, I look for the genuine interactions, details, and moments that tell the larger story. A shovel moving through the soil, someone carrying materials, a group gathered around a garden bed, friends laughing while they work — these seemingly ordinary moments can become meaningful photographs when they're captured together.
Port Townsend is an especially beautiful setting for this kind of photography. The town's strong connection to nature, creativity, community, and the outdoors creates endless opportunities for authentic visual storytelling.
Community Gardening & Working Together
Gardening is about much more than growing plants.
It can create a reason for people to gather, learn from one another, share resources, and contribute to something larger than themselves. Community gardening can bring together people with different backgrounds and experiences through something wonderfully simple: working with the land and with each other.
Photographing this process allows the story to extend beyond the garden itself.
The photographs show the people who make the space possible — planting, carrying, digging, building, organizing, teaching, helping, and enjoying the experience together.
Capturing Connection Through Photography
I'm drawn to photographs that show people in their element.
Whether I'm photographing a community project, small business, wellness space, event, family, couple, artist, or entrepreneur, I want the images to communicate more than what something looks like.
I want them to communicate what it feels like to be there.
That might mean photographing someone completely absorbed in a task, capturing an unplanned laugh between two people, documenting a group working toward a common goal, or noticing a quiet moment that could easily have gone unseen.
These photographs become a visual record of a particular place, group of people, and moment in time.
Pacific Northwest Documentary Photography
The Pacific Northwest is full of stories worth documenting.
From community gardens and creative spaces to farms, small businesses, wellness communities, nonprofits, gatherings, and outdoor projects, there are countless people creating meaningful things throughout Washington.
As a Washington documentary and lifestyle photographer, I love photographing these environments in a way that feels honest, natural, and connected to the people involved.
I don't believe every photograph needs to be perfectly posed.
Sometimes the most meaningful image is the person covered in dirt after spending the morning in the garden.
Sometimes it is a group of people standing around talking after finishing a project.
Sometimes it is simply someone's hands doing the work.
Photography That Tells the Whole Story
For community organizations, nonprofits, farms, creative projects, businesses, and gatherings, documentary photography can provide something that traditional promotional photographs often can't: a visual story of the people behind the work.
These images can be used for:
Websites
Social media
Annual reports
Community newsletters
Marketing
Fundraising
Editorial features
Press releases
Event promotion
Organization archives
Brand storytelling
The goal is to create a collection of photographs that feels genuine to the community rather than simply producing a handful of posed group photographs.
Photographing Belonging
What draws me to this type of work is the relationship between people and place.
A garden isn't just a garden. A community project isn't just a project. A gathering isn't just an event.
There are people behind all of it.
There are relationships, traditions, conversations, effort, creativity, and shared experiences.
Those are the things I want to photograph.
