There's a particular kind of light that settles over Chuckanut Drive in the hour before sunset — soft, warm, and filtered through fir trees and salt air off Samish Bay. It's one of my favorite backdrops in Bellingham for a reason: the winding coastal road offers pull-offs with sweeping water views, quiet wooded pockets for close-up portraits, and that unmistakable Pacific Northwest texture that makes a mother-and-baby session feel timeless rather than trendy.

This session was exactly that kind of afternoon.

Why Chuckanut Drive Works so Well for Motherhood Portraits

Chuckanut Drive is one of the most scenic stretches near Bellingham, and it gives a session real range in a small footprint. A few of my favorite reasons to shoot here:

Layered backdrops. Within a short walk you can move from mossy forest edges to open bluffs overlooking Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands.

Forgiving light. The tree cover offers natural diffusion for midday sessions, while the western-facing overlooks are made for golden hour.

A sense of place. For Bellingham families, this stretch of coastline often already means something — a Sunday drive, a favorite lookout, a place tied to memory. Photographing here roots the images in a real, lived-in version of home rather than a generic studio backdrop.

For this session, we moved slowly between a wooded pull-off and an open bay-view spot, letting baby set the pace. Some of the sweetest frames came in the in-between moments — not posed, just a mother adjusting a blanket or baby reaching up mid-giggle.

What to Expect from a Mother & Baby Session:

If you're considering a session like this one, here's what I typically recommend:

Time it around your baby's rhythm. Whether that's right after a nap or right before a feeding, working with your baby's natural schedule (not against it) makes for calmer, more genuine images.

Dress in soft, coordinating tones. Neutrals and muted colors tend to hold up beautifully against the greens and blues of the Chuckanut coastline without competing with it.

Leave room for real moments. Some of the most treasured images from a motherhood session aren't the posed ones — they're the quiet in-betweens: a hand wrapped around a tiny foot, a forehead kiss, the exhausted-happy look only a new parent knows.

Bring one simple prop, if any. A swaddle blanket, a favorite little outfit, or nothing at all — Chuckanut's scenery does a lot of the visual work on its own.

Motherhood moves fast, and babies change by the week. A session like this is as much about preserving a feeling as it is about the photographs themselves — the exact size of tiny hands, the specific way a baby looks up at their mom, a season of early motherhood that will look completely different a year from now.
